Jobs Role within the Film and Television Industry
There are many different types of jobs roles within the film and television industry. These jobs come under certain headings. Producers, directors, cinematographers and others come under management jobs as you need to be a skilled in everything. Jobs such as hair & make-up, art director and music come under creative jobs as you must be innovative and imaginative, and finally camera operators, technology and others similar to these come under technical jobs as you must be skilled with technology. The film and television industry is very vast with around 18,000 employees within the UK alone.
With every job in this profession, every employee, trainee, volunteer works irregular hours, on weekends, late nights and early mornings depending on what your filming and how pressured you are to get shot/scene. Depending on the job you have, you may work full-time, part-time, and shift work. Full-time employees are usually producers, part-time employees can be directors, editors, actors, and shift work would be set construction etc. The three jobs I will be discussing in this report all have irregular hours and are very similar in many ways.
Each job has different contract types being permanent, temporary, fixed term, freelance and casual depending on the job you have to undertake. Producers would hold a permanent contract as they run the production. An actor would hold a temporary contract as they only need to play the part until filming has ended. An editor would usually have a fixed term contract as they would only need to work for an agreed period of time and so on.
Within this profession, you must be very skilled and have good attributes and qualifications. To give yourself the best shot, its all about the skills you have, qualifications and experience. You must be respectable, a quick learner and be motivated and dedicated. The best way in to this industry is to start from the bottom with a small job and work your way up and, I will be explaining how exactly to do that to become a Floor Manager, Director or Camera Operator.
